How Do You Protect Wood from Water Damage?

Getting a new piece of furniture can be exciting. Usually, these wonderful additions are treated and sealed with waterproof coating, but you may need to check it more closely. If you’ve had them made, the pieces of furniture should be sealed relatively soon.

It takes about 2-3 weeks for the sawmill shine to fade from the wood, which is an optimal time to put the finishing on the wooden fixtures. It can be brushed on and coated, but some need different types depending on if they’re inside or outside furniture. Even decks need to be finished with a sealant of some sort.

Damage Control 911 of Orlando recommends to get a tinted waterproof sealer for the wood, considering the sun can damage the color of wood. Wood has a pigment in it that can be faded over time from the sun thanks to the ultraviolet light that radiates from it. Killing the pigment will cause discolor and lightening in shade, so be sure to keep that in mind when looking for a wood finisher.

Make sure you wash it and wipe it down with a cleaner first, otherwise mold and mildew can grow beneath the finish. This will ruin it faster than any water could! Be careful when making the decision to finish it.
